Mitochondrial Efficiency test

Measure cellular mitochondrial function for longevity and performance

Mitochondrial efficiency (ME), a measure of how well the cells absorb and utilize oxygen, is directly linked to quality of life and health span. Offered in only a handful of specialized research labs in the world, our non-invasive mitochondrial testing (traditionally done with muscle biopsy) provides a snapshot of cellular health and function.

Access to traditional invasive muscle biopsy is rare, expensive, and time consuming. Our proprietary method uses near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), blood pressure cuffs, and a validated bike protocol to determine your unique mitochondrial score.

Mitochondria are the "powerhouses" within most human cells, essential for energy generation. They convert oxygen and nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), powering cellular activities. Beyond energy, mitochondria regulate metabolism, contribute to hormone production, and play a role in cell signaling and life cycle.

Mitochondrial function declines with age, contributing to increased risk of cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, increased abdominal fat, high triglycerides, low HDL, high fasting glucose).

From a performance perspective, increasing ME allows for increased endurance, aerobic and anaerobic capacity, improved energy utilization, and faster recovery both during and after training.

While VO2 max allows inference of mitochondrial function, ME provides direct measurement in muscle tissue. VO2 max is the perfect complement to ME which together, provide a complete picture of cardiopulmonary function on both a systemic and cellular level. Our exercise physiologists simplify your data with a thorough report and consultation aimed to improve your health, performance, and quality of life.
